Publication Ethics

The Journal of Islamic Studies is committed to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics. This includes ensuring the integrity, transparency, and quality of the research published. The journal follows the guidelines set by prominent organizations such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and expects all involved parties — authors, editors, reviewers, and publishers — to adhere to the following ethical standards:

1. Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

  • Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure that the manuscript is entirely original and has not been published or under consideration elsewhere. Proper citations and references must be given for any work or data that are not the author’s own.

  • Authorship: All individuals who have contributed significantly to the research should be listed as co-authors. Authors must ensure that all co-authors have approved the final version of the manuscript and agree with its submission to the journal.

  • Conflicts of Interest: Authors must disclose any financial or personal relationships that could influence the research process or interpretation of the results. This includes funding sources, affiliations, or any other relationships that may create a potential conflict of interest.

  • Data Access and Retention: Authors must be able to provide access to raw data related to the study, if requested. Data should be retained for a reasonable period after publication to ensure the transparency and reproducibility of the research.

  • Human and Animal Rights: If applicable, the authors must ensure that their research involving human participants adheres to ethical guidelines and has been approved by an appropriate ethics committee. In the case of animal research, authors must adhere to ethical guidelines for the treatment of animals in research.

2. Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

  • Confidentiality: Reviewers must keep all information regarding the manuscript confidential. They should not discuss the content of the manuscript with others or use the information for personal advantage.

  • Objective Evaluation: Reviews should be conducted impartially and objectively. Reviewers must base their assessments solely on the content and quality of the manuscript, without allowing personal biases or conflicts of interest to influence their judgment.

  • Constructive Feedback: Reviewers should provide constructive and honest feedback that can help authors improve their manuscripts. Any suggestion or criticism should be based on the content and merit of the paper.

  • Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest: Reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest that may affect their ability to conduct an unbiased review. If a conflict exists, reviewers should recuse themselves from the review process.

3. Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

  • Editorial Independence: The editorial team must ensure that all decisions regarding manuscript submissions are based on academic merit, regardless of the author’s affiliations or personal characteristics. Editors must be independent of external influences.

  • Fairness and Transparency: Editors must treat all submitted manuscripts fairly and without discrimination. Editorial decisions must be based solely on the quality and relevance of the research, with no bias based on the author's nationality, institution, or gender.

  • Conflict of Interest: Editors must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that may influence their editorial decisions. In cases where conflicts arise, editors should recuse themselves from the decision-making process.

  • Peer Review Process: Editors are responsible for ensuring that a rigorous and fair peer review process is followed. They must select appropriate reviewers and make sure that the process is timely, thorough, and constructive.

  • Corrections and Retractions: If errors, inaccuracies, or ethical issues are identified in a published article, editors must take steps to issue corrections, clarifications, or retractions when necessary, ensuring the integrity of the scientific record.

4. Ethical Responsibilities of Publishers

  • Integrity of the Publication: Publishers must ensure that all aspects of the publication process maintain the highest standards of quality and academic integrity. This includes overseeing the peer review process, ensuring accurate and fair reporting, and ensuring transparency in the publication process.

  • Handling of Complaints: The publisher must ensure that any complaints related to ethics, conflicts of interest, or plagiarism are handled in a fair and timely manner. They must also collaborate with editors and authors to resolve any issues related to the publication.

  • Copyright Compliance: Publishers must ensure that the publication complies with copyright laws and regulations. They must ensure that authors retain the rights to their work while also providing proper attribution and following open access policies.

5. Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement

  • The Journal of Islamic Studies has a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism and copyright infringement. All manuscripts are checked for originality using plagiarism detection tools before being sent for review.

  • Authors must properly cite and reference all sources used in their manuscript. Any instance of plagiarism or improper citation may lead to the manuscript being rejected or retracted if it has already been published.

6. Retraction and Correction Policy

  • In cases of serious errors or misconduct that affect the validity of a paper, the Journal of Islamic Studies may retract or correct the article. This includes issues such as plagiarism, falsification of data, or when the integrity of the article is compromised.

  • Retractions and corrections will be clearly indicated in the journal, with a formal notice explaining the reason for the retraction or correction.

7. Ethical Considerations in Human and Animal Research

  • Research involving human participants must comply with ethical guidelines for human research. This includes obtaining informed consent from participants, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring participants' rights are respected throughout the study.

  • For studies involving animals, the journal adheres to ethical guidelines ensuring that animals are treated humanely and that all relevant ethical standards are met.

By adhering to these publication ethics, the Journal of Islamic Studies aims to ensure that all research published in the journal meets the highest standards of academic integrity, transparency, and quality. These ethical guidelines help maintain the trust of the scholarly community, ensuring that published research contributes positively to the advancement of knowledge in Islamic studies.
